First Day Impressions

Yesterday the team divided into pairs to write down a paragraph or two about the trip. Here are the top entries:

From the moment we got the email from Coach, who informed us that we would be taking a team trip to Costa Rica, we knew this would not only be a trip of a lifetime but also a spectacular way for all the old & many new Maryville Scots Volleyball players to bond. Previous to our departure, we learned a popular Costa Rican phrase--Pura Vida--meaning pure life. "Ticans" not only believe in this phrase by also use it in everyday life.

Upon arriving in Costa Rica, we were immediately submerged into rich culture and breathtaking scenery. After a day's travel through the countryside of Costa Rica and a taste of true Costa Rican dishes, we can only imagine what the next eight days in Costa Rica have in store for us!!!

Costa Rica Wish List:

Dear Costa Rica,

Our wish is for good weather.

Our wish is for an exciting adventure.

Our wish is for making unforgettable memories together.

Our wish is for our team chemistry to mature.

Our wish is to connect to the local community.

Our wish is to play the National Team with unity.

Our wish is to stretch our minds in Costa Rica before we come back.

But most of all our wish is to absorb Pura Vida to put MC on a new track.

Adios U.S.A., Hola Costa Rica. At 3 a.m. Monday morning, the eager & sleep-deprived Lady Scots made their way to Atlanta for the trip of a lifetime. While all of the Scots were excited about the departure, we had a few nervous first-time flyers. However, with the help of teammates they became much more relaxed. After a long plane ride & a slight time change, the Lady Scots had finally made it. Although much of the day was spent traveling, the girls got to experience some of the friendly people, delicious food, & beautiful sights.

The meaningful phrase "Pura Vida" or "pure life" had been introduced to the Lady Scots family as soon as they had arrived. Our tour guide, Madri, explained that the people of Costa Rica are known for their happiness & openness. Both were very effervescent to the Scots from the moment they landed. As the Lady Scots continue their journey they will continue to learn the true meaning of Pura Vida together.

The journey began at three o'clock
With all of our gear, balls, and socks.

All was dandy, the temperature was fine
Until it all changed on a dime.

We woke from sleep with no feeling in our toes,
Everyone was shivering all down the rows.

We were so cold, we couldn't speak out
So we just had to sit there without a pout.

Then on to the airport and security
Where one lucky winner got felt up down to her knees.

Teri was the lottery winner today
She came out smiling & headed on her way.

Nothing too exciting happened on the plane
So sleeping incurred, all the same.

Finally a time to catch up on rest
Blankets were wrapped & it soon became a slumber fest.

Madri, our guide, met us past the gate
He wasn't mad that we arrived a little late.

Quickly we loaded onto the bus
You didn't hear a complaint, not even a fuss.

Until...seven hours passed with no hotel in sight
Then out of nowhere came the glowing lights.

Dinner ensued almost immediately
I didn't think it possible to eat so quickly.

We finished the meal with mango drinks both refreshing and cool,
Then off to change and jump (or get pushed) in the pool.

The long hours of sitting throughout the day
Made it time to let out some energy & play.

Marley was the leader of the water aerobics class
Bringing out plenty of laughter & even some sass.

Eventually we were completely worn out
And will sleep soundly tonight without a doubt.
